In the Spirit of Jefferson Davis
Part one.
A January 6th, 2021, text from Stephanie
Grisham to her boss, then-First Lady Melania Trump:
“Do you want to tweet that
peaceful protests are the right of every American, but there is no place for lawlessness
& violence?”
Melania Trump’s reply
(complete text):
“No”
At this point, if you still support Donald
Trump, if you continue to espouse mythologies about a stolen election, if you
describe the Jan 6th Insurrection as anything except what it was -- a
violent, incompetent, attempted Coup (technically an “Autogolpe”) -- then your
heart has gone black with the stain of Treason. You have no love for this Country,
its Constitution, or its People. You’re a resentment-driven thug, a coward, and
a bigot.
Too many of us are deliberately
turning their eyes away from mountain of evidence that a violent,
neo-Confederate, philosophy, has achieved near-dominance over one of our two
political parties, Hell-bent making sure the personal freedoms and democratic
functions will become radically different in Texas vs. Vermont and, at the same
time, are gearing up for further violent insurrection.
I see major alleged-news
outlet FOX refusing to air the Congressional Hearings on Trump’s Treason during
prime time, more than 100 of Trump’s minions winning Primaries, excuses being
made for those who committed violence, and endless deflections by those upon
whom rests the primary responsibility to take actions to preserve our Republic.
The January attempted Coup
was only practice, the storm is still coming, and our Nation’s enemies will
learn from their mistakes and hone their skills. Full-scale Civil War threatens
now as badly as it did the year of that other famous act of Confederate-inspired
violence in this Nation’s Capital building -- the 1856 attempted murder of Senator
Charles Sumner.
Sumner, a fiery
opponent of both Slavery and Sedition, was nearly beaten to death with a
silver-headed cane brandished by slavery-loving Representative Preston Brooks,
and this was done in public, on the floor of the Senate Chamber. Brooks was
assisted by Representative Laurence M. Keitt, who threatened two Senators who
tried to stop the attack by waving a gun at them.
The full-scale Civil
War that this violence anticipated, and would ultimately kill more of our
people than all other of our Wars combined, would break out less than a decade
later. How the institutions and people of the USA responded to the outrage
might have encouraged the coming holocaust, because though the facts were never
in question, there was a profound disinterest in holding the wrong-doers
accountable for their sins.
Neither Brooks nor
Keitt were punished by the members of the Federal legislatures, they weren’t criminally
prosecuted, and both were re-Elected. Brooks and Kiett’s supporters mocked Summer,
claiming he was a coward faking his injuries. Canes similar to the one used in
the assault sold like hot-cakes among the supporters of Slavery, and were often
emblazoned with the words, “Hit him again.” Towns and districts on Virginia,
Florida, and Georgia were quickly renamed in Brooks’ honor. When full-scale
Civil War broke-out, Keitt proudly donned the Traitor’s Grey uniform and took
to the field to kill more Patriots, all to preserve the profits of Slavery; he died
during his first battle. Brooks had died of natural causes before the outbreak
of the War.
Is it really any
surprise that the Confederacy’s mad dreams took hold? We had already telegraphed
that their actions faced no consequences, and this had to be a key reason why the
Traitors concluded that they could get away with further acts of evil, despite
the fact that the Republic for which we stand could put more men into the field
than the Traitors could, that the Traitors were faced a world-class industrial-power
while they began the war without cannon factories, or an adequate railroad
system, and had only tenuous international support, which quickly evaporated.
And I see it happening
again now.
